About project

Hydrogen business is increasing rapidly in EU level and globally, and Finnish companies are figuring out their roles in this market. These companies need to build new competences to develop their product and service portfolio to enter the global market with competitive and value creating offering. FinH2will support the target by providing critical up-to-date knowledge and hands-on experience from whole hydrogen value chain, from material and components to system integration and hydrogen utilization. The export potential for Finland in electrolyzer technology is significant and estimated to be 3 B€ annually in 2030.

World-leading hydrogen ecosystem

Especially FinH2 will create radical, technological innovations for sector coupled electrolyzer technology to improve their efficiency and lower their costs. New skilled people will be educated to this field, and they will have opportunities to work with process developers and end users. Within the project, common research needs are identified and EU-funding for research, development, and demonstration projects is applied for. Altogether, FinH2 is an important step towards Finnish hydrogen ecosystem and will enable companies to start or accelerate their hydrogen related business.

Applications capable in energy transition

In FinH2, PEM and alkaline electrolysis technology will be developed and optimized for sector coupling, i.e. integrating hydrogen production with heat, oxygen, and grid support markets. This will increase revenue and make electrolyzer plant more profitable and accelerate market penetration. Electrolyzer technology will be designed, optimized, and manufactured utilizing components and services from participating companies. The developed system will be characterized first in the laboratory and then moved to HELEN’s industrial site for final demonstration. Safety regulations, codes, and standards will be carefully taken into account in system design, control and operation.

The need for the project is based on following drivers:

  • Market: Urgent need for energy efficient technologies that enable large scale production of clean hydrogen. The current hydrogen production by electrolysis is very small compared to projected demand at EU and global level, which opens new business possibilities for Finnish companies. Electrolysis is an essential phase in P2X processes, and therefore this project is concentrating on this key technology.
  • Society: Hydrogen is one key technology to electrify and decarbonize many industrial sectors. Clean hydrogen can be used as a feedstock, fuel or energy carrier, and enables sustainable development, which is the lifeline for the future society. Clean hydrogen sector is expected to create more than 10000 new high tech jobs in Finland by 2030 according to Hydrogen Cluster Finland.
  • Business need: Finnish companies are looking for their roles in rapidly expanding hydrogen business. FinH2 will support companies by providing latest knowledge and experience from whole hydrogen value chain, from material and components to system integration and hydrogen utilization. FinH2 is an important building block for a Finnish hydrogen ecosystem and will enable companies to start or accelerate their hydrogen related business.
